Dance Base
Dance Base is a new community dance facility within the Old Town of Edinburgh. The project, whilst acknowledging the mediaeval grain of the City, incorporates a number of existing buildings as well as building new elements to the North, as the site rises towards the Castle rocks. The four 'individual' studios are arranged to capture unique views of the City and are accessed off internal courts, naturally lit to reinforce a clarity of movement through the building. Support facilities are then organised at the lower levels where the building is cut into the slope, again with natural light brought down where feasible.

The building was funded by an Arts Lottery Award and completed in 2001. The project won the RIAS Doolan Prize in 2002 and was also finalist for the Stirling Prize in 2002.
